How to create different page numbers for sections

Microsoft has explained how to add different page numbers to different sections in Word. It would be best if you created page breaks to insert other page numbers in the same Word document. Let's say that you have a 22-page Word document and want to add different page numbers.

  • First section: 1 – 15
  • Second section: 1 – 7

We will show you the steps to insert a section break and add different page numbers in the same Word document.

Different page numbers in the same Word document

In our example, we have written a 22-page long document. In addition, we have created a Table of Contents and inserted a header and page numbers in the footer. It means we have a document with page numbers starting from the first page.

Before we start doing anything, it is better to view the paragraph marks and section breaks in your Word document.

  • In your Home tab > go to the Paragraph group in the ribbon
  • Click on this symbol ¶
show paragraph marks

You could also use a shortcut to show or hide paragraph marks and other nonprinting symbols in Word.

  • Use the keyboard shortcut:
  • Ctrl + Shift + 8
Show paragraph marks

Insert section break

You must add a section break between two chapters in your document. In our example, we place the cursor at the end of chapter 6 on page 15. Here you can see the symbol ¶.

  • Place the cursor at the end of the text of the first section.
  • Just before the symbol ¶, as you can see in the below picture.
end section paragraph
  • Click on Layout in the ribbon
  • Click on Breaks > a selection opens
  • Under Section Breaks > Select Next Page

If you did it correctly, you would see Section Break (Next Page) inserted i. Now you have successfully created a new section in the same Word document. The next page is a new section, where you can change a different header and footer.

Now we want to change the page number in the second section. First, go down to the next page below the section break. Then put your mouse cursor in the footer. In our example, that will be the footer on page number 16.

  • Double-click on the footer at the beginning of the second section
  • Now you will see Footer-Section 2– on the upper left side
  • Same as Previous on the upper right side

Now we have to deselect something in the footer.

  1. Make sure you are still in the footer
  2. Go to Header & Footer Tools > Design in the ribbon
  3. Click on Link to Previous

Notice: If Link to Previous is greyed out, then you have not inserted a section break.

When you successfully deselect Link to Previous, you can see that it is not highlighted (dark grey) in the ribbon. It will also make the Same as Previous on the upper right side of the footer disappear.

The page numbering for the beginning of the second section should change to 1, as you can see on the right side of the picture. You can also see that section 1 ends on page number 15 in the footer. This is how you create different page number sections in Word.

When you are done you can remove the Show/Hide ¶ in the Home tab > under Paragraph group. Or use the shortcut Ctrl + Shift + 8 to hide paragraph marks.
